BioWare’s Answer to Piracy: DLC, MP, Loyal Fans

Files under GamePosts | Leave a Comment

Piracy continues to hurt PC gaming, and no one has a clear answer to the problem.

Development studio Crytek has proposed abandoning PC-exclusive game releases. BioWare, however, is less radical. They’re looking at downloadable content, access to multiplayer and - here’s a new one - simply encouraging consumer loyalty.

Three semi-rare PS2 games get reprints

Files under GamePosts | Leave a Comment

Destructoid writes: "Reprints rock. Especially reprints of Atlus and NIS games that you missed out on during the initial run and are now selling for well above the MSRP. We told you about Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne getting the reprint treatment a few months ago, and now bring word of another title in the SMT line that is as well.

Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga is now available at Play-Asia for $44.90. Play-Asia has also let us know through their newsletter that their supply of Nocturne reprints have also been restocked, so feel free to nab one of those if you haven’t already.

The NIS camp is also reprinting one of its harder to find games, AR Tonelico: Melody of Elemia. They also have a reprint of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness available, but that’s not quite as exciting due to there already being several versions available and another one coming to the DS. While both of these are available at Play-Asia as well, their prices are marked up rather high. Pick em up at NIS distributor Rosenqueen instead."

Sexy sells

Files under GamePosts | Leave a Comment

Sex sells. We know it does. And when the target audience consists mostly of men it’s a no-brainer that wrapping some rudely inviting breasts, a cute ass and a killer pair of pins around any game-related product is going to turn heads. Certainly it’s guaranteed to get more attention than an unsexed alternative. A promo shoot for a racing car game without a near-naked maiden draped over the hood is just, well, a picture of a car. No matter the horsepower, it lacks aesthetic va-va-voom.

BioShock shouldn’t have worked

Eurogamer writes: "Damnation developer Blue Omega reckons there was "no frigging way" BioShock should have ended up being successful.

Game designer Jason Minkoff was comparing it to Damnation to illustrate that all you can do in the shooter genre is pour your heart into a project and hope it gets noticed.

"We’re just making the best we can, because a good game is a good game. And if you make a good game, somebody is going to notice and somebody is going to play it," Jason Minkoff told Eurogamer on our trip to see Damnation."

Sony Fixes PS3 Firmware Fiasco: We Test the Fix

Files under GamePosts | Leave a Comment

PC World writes: "As reported last week, Sony’s highly anticipated 2.40 firmware update for the PlayStation 3 caused many systems to unexpectedly become ‘bricked,’ meaning that the systems stopped functioning and were basically as useful as a large, black, shiny brick.

Today Sony is fixing its firmware mistake with the release of firmware update 2.41. The 2.41 update does everything that the 2.40 update was supposed to do, without the annoyance of making your system completely useless. That means PS3 fans can now enjoy all of their trophies and the in-game cross media bar in brick-free bliss.

Personally, I didn’t experience any problems with the 2.40 update on my own PS3, but I downloaded 2.41 just to be on the safe side. I played some test rounds of Super Stardust HD, and I’m pleased to report that everything seems to be working just fine with the new update."
